I am doing the Kiltwalk to raise funds to support the charity I work for - The Glad Foundation.
In autumn 2012 my friend and I started a community choir at The Glad Cafe - at that time a newly opened social enterprise, cafe and music venue, in Shawlands. We heard about the Glad's aim, to reinvest any profits made to support music learning opportunities for young people and adults of all backgrounds and abilities, and so decided from the very beginning to do what we could to support that aim by raising funds through the choir's performances. In the early stages, before the Glad Foundation existed as a registered charity, some amazing pilot projects were run with the help of money raised by the choir's efforts, from private donations, and through Glad Rags Thrift, the cafe's sister organisation.
Eventually when the Foundation registered as a charity and secured some open project funding from Creative Scotland I was thrilled to manage to get the job as Project Manager, and for the last few years have worked to build a weekly programme of after school classes and workshops, projects run in partnership with local primary and secondary schools, and see the Glad Foundation grow into a vital part of our community, giving people of all ages a chance to take part in music-making with all of the creative and social benefits it brings.
By sponsoring me to do the Kiltwalk you will help secure ongoing support for young people and adults to learn instruments, to come together and share the joy of creating music together, to learn the skills of listening and mutual support necessary to play and sing as part of a group, and feel that joyful sense of belonging that comes from being part of a thriving inclusive community.
